Once you have many people doing something, you have lots of competition and little differentiation. You, generally, never want to be part of a popular trend… So I think trends are often things to avoid. What I prefer over trends is a sense of mission. That you are working on a unique problem that people are not solving elsewhere. - Peter Thiel
Kurt Vonnegut on picking a lane:
Find a subject you care about and which you in your heart feel others should care about. It is this genuine caring, and not your games with language, which will be the most compelling and seductive element in your style.
I am not urging you to write a novel, by the way—although I would not be sorry if you wrote one, provided you genuinely cared about something. A petition to the mayor about a pothole in front of your house or a love letter to the girl next door will do.
Language can become a screen which stands between the thinker and reality. This is the reason why true creativity often starts where language ends. — Arthur Koestler
A mind all logic is like a knife all blade. It makes the hand bleed that uses it.
— Rabindranath Tagore
Jerry Seinfeld likes to say, “I’m never not working on material. Every second of my existence, I am thinking, ‘What can I do with that?’”
If you're trying to curate and control everything, you're not really taking any risks in life or in art: you'll never feel that good about being seen because what's being seen isn't you. - Ava
Here is my resume: I am a good mother to three children. I have tried never to let my profession stand in the way of being a good parent. I no longer consider myself the center of the universe. I show up. I listen, I try to laugh. I am a good friend to my husband. I have tried to make marriage vows mean what they say. I show up. I listen. I try to laugh. I am a good friend to my friends, and they to me. Without them, there would be nothing to say to you today, because I would be a cardboard cutout. But call them on the phone, and I meet them for lunch. I show up. I listen. I try to laugh. via
Many people fear nothing more terribly than to take a position which stands out sharply and clearly from the prevailing opinion. The tendency of most is to adopt a view that is so ambiguous that it will include everything and so popular that it will include everybody. Not a few men who cherish lofty and noble ideas hide them under a bushel for fear of being called different.
~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
I’m thinking about how they say “you should never meet your heroes” because it’ll likely end up being a disappointment. I disagree. I think getting to know my heroes—the people I most look up to—is what’s made me realize we’re all humans and there is nothing separating us from them. via
